Illinois Housing Grants Resources

The State of Illinois is the 25th most extensive and 5th most populous of the 50 states in the US. It is often noted as a microcosm of the whole country.

The population of Illinois was 12,869,257 as stated by the United States Census Bureau on July 1, 2011. Dollar gross state product was estimated to be $652 billion in 2010.

With the big tax funding and many opportunities in the state, several grants including Illinois housing grants are available for the low to moderate income individuals and families.

Illinois Housing Development Authority (IHDA)

IHDA was created in 1967 as a self-supporting authority by the state legislature to finance quality affordable housing in Illinois. They aim to work as a bank with a public mission of financing creation and preservation of affordable housing across Illinois State.

Their financing actually works both ways. They help thousands of individuals and families attain their own home and at the same time, keep residents working through construction jobs.

IHDA have helped approximaPhoney 50,000 residents purchase their first home affordably. The mission of this Illinois housing grant is to continue creating and preserving affordable housing to increase supply of decent and safe places for individuals of low to moderate means of living.

Funding for grants assistance comes from two resources:

• HOME Investment Partnerships Program
• Illinois Affordable Housing Trust Fund Program

For grant assistance, household earnings at or below the 50% of area median income are eligible for a maximum grant amount of $5,000. Household earnings between 50% and 80% of area median income are eligible for a maximum grant amount of $3,000. Grants are given monthly over a five-year recapture period.

Chicago Rehab Network (CRN)

CRN is a citywide coalition of neighborhood and community-based development organizations founded in 1977. This Illinois housing grant consist of over 40 housing organizations over 60 neighborhoods.

They believe that housing, just like health care and education, is critical for every family and community success.

CRN has been working for 30 years to provide development and preservation of safe affordable housing in Chicago, as well as, throughout Illinois.

They build capacity of community developers through proper training and technical assistance. They conduct research to know the needs and note challenges for affordable housing development.

Metropolitan Planning Council (MPC)

This is an Illinois housing grant formed in 1934. MPC has been committed to successful development of public housing and integration of good quality homes affordable to very low income households.
They work in collaboration with Chicago Housing Authority, City of Chicago Department of Community Development, and Partnership for New Communities. They are funded by Bowman C. Lingle Trust, The F.B. Heron Foundation, and JP Morgan Chase.
