Kansas Housing Grants Resources

Kansas is the 15th most extensive and 33rd most populous of the 50 US states. United States Census Bureau estimates that the population of Kansas was 2,871,238 on July 1, 2011

Kansas is one of the slowest-growing states in the nation. The term “rural flight” started as the last few decades have been marked by a migratory pattern out of the countryside to cities.

But at the same time, metropolitan Kansas City is among the fastest growing in the country paving way for funds for Kansas housing grants. In Kansas alone, there are more than 6,000 ghost towns and dwindling communities.

Kansas Rural Development Rural Housing Programs

Rural America encompasses 80% of the nation’s land area and is home to about 20% of its people.

The Single Family Housing Direct Loan Program provides home purchase financing and repairs for low income families.

In 2010, American Recovery and Reinvestment Act appropriations have been added to the regular annual allocation of funds from Congress. This increased available financing by over 225%.

An eligible “rural” area for development of housing programs from Kansas housing grants includes only open country and cities with less than 10,000 to 20,000 populations. Kansas cities that are not rural and therefore not included in this program are: Wichita, Kansas City, Leavenworth, Overland Park, Topeka, Elwood, Lawrence, Emporia, Manhattan, El Dorado, Hutchison, Newton, Dodge City, Salina, and Garden City.

There are many housing programs under this. Some of which include:

502 Guaranteed Program
Provides financing for purchasing a home for applicants with low to moderate incomes.

502 Direct Program
Provides financing to purchase a home or repair a home already owned.

502 Mutual Self Help Program
Not available in all areas. This Kansas housing grant assists families build their homes. A group of 8 to 12 families and individuals work together under the supervision of a construction supervisor hired by the developer. The group will perform about 65% of the construction work. No one moves in until all houses are completed.

Leverage loans
Loans made in partnership with other programs and institutions. This program offers financing towards the purchase at 0% interest and forgiven over time if conditions are met.

Kansas Housing Resources Corporation (KHRC)

KHRC is a self-supporting public corporation. This is a Kansas housing grant that serves as the primary administrator of federal housing programs for Kansas State. The corporation’s mission is to increase availability of affordable, accessible, and decent housing for low income Kansans.

Created as “one-stop shop for housing”, they administer over 25 affordable housing programs.

KHRC does not receive operational revenue from the State of Kansas. They sustain themselves through Federal contracts for service and program administration fees.

Kim Wilson Housing Inc.

Kim Wilson Housing works collaboratively in order to develop different housing options for persons specifically with special needs.

Supportive housing is affordable housing linked to accessible mental health, employment, substance addiction, and other support services needed. This Kansas housing grant provides persons who have been homeless for the long term a way out of expensive emergency public services.

Kim Wilson Housing is funded by grants from US Department of Housing and Urban Development.
