Maryland Housing Grants Resources

Maryland is the 9th least extensive but the 19th most populous of the 50 US states. It is the 5th most densely populated state in the US. With an area of 12,406.68 square miles, it is the 9th smallest state. As of July 1, 2011, the population of Maryland as per United States Census Bureau is 5,828,289. Maryland holds the wealthiest households in the country as per 2009 census with a median income of $69,272. But it still holds a 7.8% state poverty rate.

Maryland’s gross state product in 2006 was about $257 billion according to The Bureau of Economic Analysis. The state gives out different types of grants including education grants, Maryland housing grants, and historic preservation grants.

Maryland Affordable Housing Trust (MAHT)

Established in 1992, this trust was created by the Maryland General Assembly to make affordable housing available for the Maryland residents. This trust is governed by the Board of Trustees in coordination with Maryland Housing and Community Development.

MAHT makes affordable housing available for individuals or families earning less than 50% of the median income of the state. This Maryland housing grant holds two funding rounds per year, generally in January and August. Maximum award amount that can be given is $150,000.

Volunteers of America Chesapeake (VOA)

Volunteers of America is a non-profit organization with around 16,000 paid, professional employees working to help individuals and families in need.

Established in 1896 in Baltimore, they have been since helping America’s most vulnerable groups including youth, elderly, homeless individuals and families, and persons with disabilities. This Maryland housing grant serves over 9,000 persons annually through programs from Baltimore, Maryland to Virginia Beach, Virginia. They also have around 65,000 volunteers throughout the country.

For VOA, the home is far more than a shelter. They believe it is the foundation of life. They provide not only safe and affordable housing but also the vital support services needed by the individuals or families to thrive and start a decent way of living.

VOA envisions a country with 0% rate of homelessness. They are committed to their work as an advocate encouraging the development and operation of affordable housing nationwide.

Shelter and Transitional Housing Facilities Grant Program (STHGP)

STHGP provides grants for improvement and creation of transitional housing and emergency shelters. The main purpose of this program is a 0% rate of homelessness in the State.

STHGP is a Maryland housing grant that provides funding for new construction, rehabilitation of housing, and purchase capital equipment. Grants also include supportive services for Maryland residents.

Eligible residents are the homeless or in danger of becoming homeless individuals or families. Under some conditions, grants may be granted for as much as 75% of the total project costs. $25,000 grant can also be given for pre-development costs.
